I’m studying engineering, and I see sine waves everywhere I look. why is this waveform so common in nature?

Differential equations tend to be a useful way to describe the world, especially in engineering. And differential equations make it really easy to make sine waves. The simplest one I’ve seen is y” = -y. Based on this definition alone, any system with a quantity with a force pushing against it that scales with the quantities own value will trace out a sine wave.

This reasoning can be generalized to other types of systems.
