Why do we still feel like our surrounding is still shaking after an earthquake?

An earthquake can be compared to like shaking a glass of water on a table. Shake the table and the water will shake with it, stop and the main problem will go away, but it continues to shake in both the top and bottom of the glass. It takes a while to settle, but in a sense, inertia keeps the ground shaking.

Once its stopped though, its like getting off a boat or carnival ride. Your body has adjusted to a new environment and has a difficult time adjusting back to something completely still. I’d look more into Motion Sickness if you’re interested
