: Why do we struggle speaking/screaming when afraid and scared?

Title explains it all i guess.

I have experienced it personally and there are multiple such moments in movies and TV shows. It just feels like no matter how hard I try nothing comes out.

When we tense up when scared, it can tense up our vocal chords and throat muscles too. If the vocal chords are too tense, they can’t easily open and close to make sounds.
