Why do we uncontrollably tense up our muscles so much when we’re in pain?

Can be a multi factorial response! Two things I can think of:

1. Basic “flight or fight” response is triggered by fear/injury, and our body prepares to defend or flee from “danger”.

2. When injured, we instinctually move into a position that least triggers the pain, for self preservation. This leads to our bodies maintaining a certain position, maintained by muscle contraction.
