Why do we yawn, and why is yawning contagious?

Yawning helps increase oxygen intake and may cool the brain, making us more alert. It often happens when we’re tired or transitioning between wakefulness and sleep. It can also signal to others that we need to rest or change activity.

Special brain cells called mirror neurons help us mimic the actions of others, making yawning spread easily. Additionally, contagious yawning may help groups synchronize their alertness and stay connected.
