why do windows/lamps etc. suddenly make a noise like they are expanding?

Because they are.

When things change temperature they expand and contract. That’s just how life works.

Windows do expand. When the sun hits them they heat up and expand. I believe it’s usually the wood around them, rather than the actual glass window.

Not heard it from lamps but lamps do also get warm when on, especially older non led ones. Expanding would be a normal reaction to heating up.

The front door in my old house was a very tight fit on warm summer days a few times a year, but perfectly normal fit any other time of year. Most materials expand in heat.
