Is it psychological or physical? Is it a combination of both?

You develop a tolerance because your brain gets used to the same amount of alcohol. It is definitely physiological. Because it involves receptors – proteins in/on cells in brain (Receptors like – GABA, NMDA, Dopamine). Now the alcohol/drug binds itself to these receptors, and triggers a specific response in the cell – activating a process or sending a signal to other cells. As you keep consuming the substance, there is a continuous presence of the same, and these receptors adapt to the continued presence. As simple as that. You keep on watching reels, your brain adapts to its presence. You keep on waking up early, your brain adapts.
