I believe the current research indicates that they may be small, localized seizures in the brain. Similar “brain zaps” are described when people discontinue medication which increases GABA levels, an inhibitor to brain neural activity. As MDMA increases the release of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine it seems reasonable that similar “brain zaps” are also small seizures from the increases synaptic activity.
