why do your teeth hurt when you drink cold water?

Inside every tooth in your head is (generally speaking) a nerve. It’s usually well-protected from the environment by the insides of your teeth and the enamel over top, so normally you wouldn’t feel anything. However, if the enamel starts to wear away, or your gums aren’t properly shielding the root, cold sensations (from water, or ice cream, or what have you) can get to the nerves in your teeth and cause pain.
Definitely bring it up with your dentist the next time you go in.
