Quite a few different reasons. One reason would be a lack of intensity: so you’ve told yourself to focus hard, but haven’t told yourself WHAT to focus on, so the message becomes all murky. Another reason would be the duration of intensity: attention is a precious skill, evolutionarily speaking – helps evade predators, looks for food, etc. If you’re focusing on one thing for a long time that’s not that relevant, the longer you pay attention the more drained your attention capacity will be, as well as realizing that attention to this thing is not worth your survival.
