Alcohol is a Central Nervous System Depressant.

It inhibits the workings of your brain and nerves that are responsible for feeling pain.

If you drank a lot you can notice more of these “my brain is not working good”-effects. You can’t walk straight, you cant articulate clearly. You can’t see clearly.

This it achieves by dampening down the pain signals that sensory neurons send to the brain. But this effect is highly variable and doesn’t happen in everyone.

Most drugs fall into two super types- “Stimulants” and “Depressants”.

“Stimulants” enhance your brain’s actions beyond what they should be. You think faster, you get more energy, you feel things harder. Note that this is not a good thing in most cases- your body’s limits exist for a reason.

“Depressants” do the opposite. They slow your nervous system down. You process things slower, you lose coordination, you feel things less.

Alcohol is a very typical depressant. It makes you feel physical sensations less. Therefore, less pain.
