Why does an itchy area feel fastly bigger if one were to see the one or two hairs being irritated by like a small thing?

I just got a very strong urge to itch my arm while I was typing and noticed a little fluff (I have cats and fans on), ot was like the size of a tic tac but I would say the area of the itch felt like a golf ball. How can that be if only a few tiny hairs noticed the “irritation”?
