Why does autism affect males and females differently?

1.20K viewsBiologyOther

So I recently got diagnosed with autism, and my therapist was talking about how it was most likely missed because of how different the disorder can show itself in boys vs girls.

So, why?

It looks like it’s the same over different populations, so I don’t think it’s anything to do with culture or anything like that. So is it something biological? Maybe it interacts with chromosomes or something?

I keep seeing things that tell me that it’s different, but nothing about why.

There is some speculation that it may have to do with it being carried similar to a recessive X gene. So boys are more likely to be Autistic but if a girl does get it then it’s more likely to be more severe than what a boy would experience.

In boys the if X gene passed by the mom is autistic then the boy will be autistic because the father doesn’t have an X gene to overcome it.

In girls if the mother passes down an autistic x gene then it falls on the fathers X gene to determine if the girl will be autistic. If he passes down a non-autistic X gene (most likely) then the girl will not be autistic or maybe just slightly so and fly under the radar.

But if the father also passes down an autistic x gene then she will be autistic and more likely to be severely autistic because she got a double dose of x autistic genes.
