Why does Boston robotics “abuse” the robots?

You have to teach the robots how to respond to different stuff happening to them. Bumping into surfices, unstable footing, living things, etc. By interaction with various situations, the robots will learn to adapt. Much like a baby learning how to walk will have to learn how to deal with stairs, ramps &/or bumping into the dog.
