Why does breakup hurt more than Divorce?

Divorce is a looooong process for most people. By the time a person decides to get divorced, the writing’s been on the wall for months or years. It seldom comes out of nowhere and if it’s unexpected, someone just hasn’t been paying attention. Also, a lengthy separation often precedes a divorce, so the “breakup” already happened well in the past by the time divorce is actually sought (and granted).
Breakups, on the other hand, can seem like they drop from the sky, especially if the couple isn’t living together. The initial shock can be unexpected and devastating.
Of course, neither is absolute – some divorces are quite unbearable all the way through, and some breakups are easy peasy – you go your way, I’ll go mine. Best of luck!
