The weather in California is very good, and quite stable. This exerts an evolutionary pressure for a tree to maintain it’s turf.

This. Sunshine and coastal/mountain snow moisture keep the sequoias and redwoods happy. Far back (geological timeframe) they were widespread across North America. As the climate changed, the big trees retreated from other reaches of the continent to their “retirement” status along the Pacific Coast.
