Why does fluid come out of our eyes when we get “sad” or upset? How could a genetic characteristic like that develop?

Yet, studies have shown that sadness tears contain different hormons and stuff than tears of joy or similar. So, we do “need” our tears to get rid of the stuff that makes us sad.
