Why does glycolysis release energy is breaking a bond is endothermic?

I can’t find any good online resources for this; every site I have found says that energy is released by breaking bonds, which is incompatible with what I am learning in chem class.

Because after that specific bond is broken, the process goes on to form several new bonds that together release more energy than the original cost of breaking that first bond.

The exact same thing happens when you burn wood or gasoline. Yes, it costs energy to break the bonds in the wood or gasoline, but the energy released by making the carbon dioxide and water products is so huge that overall the process releases energy.
