Why does gum get harder the longer you chew it instead of softer?

Wouldn’t your teeth wear it down overtime so it should get softer?

The actual gum base of a piece of gum is what’s left after you’ve chewed it a while. That’s what gum is truly like. The other stuff that’s in the piece of gum when you first put it into your mouth make it softer and more sticky, but those things are soluble in saliva and are worked out of the gum as you chew it. After a while all you have is the actual gum, and it’s a bit harder.
