The light that you see has to travel through the air before it hits your eyes and you see whatever you’re looking at. Light travels at a different speed through hot air than it does through cold air. This different speed causes the light to distort and bend. So, the path that the light takes between the object you’re looking at gets distorted by the hot air in between.
