Why does hitting your head eyes closed sometimes create a flash of light or color in your retina?

Those flashes are what happens when the nerves in your eye are stressed by jiggling/twisting/bumping around. It’s a bit like static on a TV – there’s no light hitting your retina, but the stress on your retinal nerves is sending garbled signals that *look* like light to your brain.
