Why does it feel “easier” to go up a set of steps on an angle, rather than straight on? Surely the work required to go up them is the same?

Instead of imagining steps, picture a hillside. If you were to go straight up the hill it would be steep and difficult, but if you go diagonally across it’s increasing the length but not the height. This gives you an ‘easier’ pitch to ascend.
