Why does it feel “easier” to go up a set of steps on an angle, rather than straight on? Surely the work required to go up them is the same?

My dog is getting older and he has started going up our back steps on an angle instead of straight on like he used to, and I’ve noticed this in my own experience as well, it just “feels” easier
