I’ve always been curious as to why when people get bad news it looks like the color drains from their face as well as what causes this.

Bad news triggers the fight or flight mechanism. A surge of sympathetic activity trying to bring blood to your vital organs, placing your body in an optimal mode in order to deal with a bad situation. This causes constriction of vessels that lead to the skin in the face, that blood is better used elsewhere like your muscles, brain, etc. The loss of blood to your facial skin makes it look pale, or as if the color has drained.
