Why does licking your lips help you whistle?

I’ve noticed that I often need to lick my lips when I’m in the middle of whistling along to a song. Why?

Apparently my first answer wasn’t good enough. The saliva fills in the little cracks and gaps in your lips, so you are becoming a better wind instrument. Little gaps and cracks allow air to escape and disrupt the flow needed for the whistle to happen.
