Why does our body digest food differently when we’re nervous?

Our brains haven’t really evolved to deal with nervousness induced by things like a presentation at work. It treats stressors like that the same way it would treat suddenly seeing a bear running at you. In those cases, the body prioritizes energy where it is most needed (your muscles), and not secondary things (like digestion). This works fine for the short term threats that we evolved to deal with (like bears), but not so well for the long term ‘threats’ that we deal with in the modern day (like work, school, etc.)
