I have a sinus infection and every time i bring up phlegm it tastes funky, almost like a bloody taste. Why?

Your body has many teeny tiny capillaries all through your very sensitive airways.

When we cough enough – especially with an infection – we can break many of the tiny little capillaries and, even though we don’t directly see blood, can still have an amount of red blood cells among the discarded white cells and mucus that it can cause the metallic taste, as far as I can tell from some brief research.

Is there any blood in it? It can look like a dark veiny effect rather than a smear or lump. You likely have burst a little blood vessel or rubbed your throat raw from coughing. It’s perfectly normal. If you ever cough drops of blood seek medical attention.
