Why does poop smell?

It seems that poop has a very strong scent, no matter which animal created it. Also many animals smell other animals’ poop or poop from animals of their own species.

Poop is effectively rotting biomass. You chewed it up, stewed it in acid, then sent it down a tunnel of bacteria fun time. Just because you ejected it doesn’t mean that all those bacteria died and have stopped eating away at the “stuff”.

All of that breaks down the chemical components and creates certain byproducts. Many of those products are gases that our noses are adapted to detect. Its a survival mechanism: Fecal matter has a lot of stuff that can make you sick and can also indicate the presence of a dangerous animal. Or the presence of a prey animal you can hunt.
