From days living in caves and hiding from monsters. Most predators hide during the storms. So it gave us a bit of relief.

deep in our brains we still have an affinity for nature. rain and running water are all stress relievers because we know a good water source is available nearby.

It’s not universal but for many people rain is a familiar white noise. Something predictable, easy to filter out, but also covers up the uncomfortable silent. Other people find the sounds of lightning and thunder entertaining.

On the other hand, the sound of flowing water is almost universally appealing so long as you have an empty bladder. Humans need water every three days and the sound of flowing water doesn’t just mean Water Here, it means relatively pure water, often fresh from rainwater.

It’s random noise that drowns out other noises. That makes it easier to focus or relax because you’re not getting distracted by other sounds. This is why white/brown noise is also very relaxing.

It’s rythmic and I’m sure it has something to do with knowing our crops will grow or a fire will be put out or well have fresh water to drink
