Some people asked that question some years ago, not the ELI5 version, but the actual scientific explanation on that. Why is good posture good, why is bad posture bad, etc. What they initially found out was… no one knows, scientifically speaking. There is no one single reference to who discovered that, who did what experiments to determine that. Just that everywhere you read, “hey it’s good because that’s the good posture, it has health benefits, etc.” But then again, not one single explanation. So they did what science tries to do, find an explanation and actually test how good is good posture.

Long story short, what they found was that, well, actually there is no such thing as good or bad posture. There are no health benefits to posture (the non ELI5, correlation != causation), and people have different natural postures. Yes, plural. Our natural posture changes with mood, energy, position (sitting or standing) and may not be the same between people. This is really recent, from 2019, before that, the accepted medical knowledge was good posture = good health, but up to this day there is no certainty of where does this belief actually originated.

So why does it feel good? Because that’s probably YOUR natural posture.
