Simple. Imagine a gate in front of you. Unless that gate opens you can’t get through, the same goes for pain. Pain is transported to the brain through small nerve fibers in the spine. They are the gate, and when you are distracted or don’t notice a small injury, the gate remains closed and you don’t feel pain.
This is the reason distractions ease even the worst pains, the gate just closes.
