Why does static discharge turn on my PC?

It seems that no matter what gives me a static discharge in my room, it turns my PC on. For example, I often get a static discharge from my chair, and my PC turns on. Same thing if I touch my laptop, PC turns on. What causes it and how could I prevent it?

A humidifier might help. Static electrical build up and discharge occur more frequently in low humidity environments.

Be cautious is you decide to use one. Tap water contains a lot of minerals that get discharged into the air along with the water if not properly treated. This could lead to build up electrical components and surfaces which might cause other problems, however, not a huge concern. But a higher humidity should help cut down on the problem.

Most likely what is happening is the discharge is triggering components after the laptop power switch on the motherboard
