Damaged / inflamed tissue releases histamines, nerve growth factor and other related chemicals. These chemicals help repair tissue damage and magnify the response of nearby pain/heat receptors.

When the body releases histamines at/near the sight of the damage, these histamines dilate blood vessels, but ultimately produce the itch sensation.
