It turns out that humans, and other social animals, who have an inherited urge to pee whenever they are around running water instead of just peeing anywhere have had a lower rate of illness spreading to their family. So this genetic trait have been passed down throughout the generations.

When you pee, liquid is running from your body and splashing into the toilet water. Brain makes the connection of peeing to any liquid running. Now whenever you hear or see water running, your brain is thinking about liquids running….including peeing.

There are two reasons for this: (1) the sound of running water masks any other sounds – that might make you feel embarrassed; and (2) the sound of water is relaxing, which leads to a feeling of calm, which again leads to less embarrassment.
