Why does this immediately decongest you??

I read somewhere on Reddit once that if you’re stuffed up, you just need to press your tongue to the roof of your mouth while simultaneously pressing your palm to your forehead. I am extremely sick rn and was like “might as well try that” and it works??? Like magic?? Can somebody please explain why? Thank you!

Oh no, you’re not going to get me again. I do all that stuff and then you pull my pants down.

Nice try, reddit.

Easiest way for me to explain is that there is a nasal plate there that you are essentially moving allowing the accumulated mucus to empty out. Another similar method is to alternate pressing the top of your mouth cavity with your thing and applying pressure to the bridge of your nose. This creates a sort of rocking motion on the plate that also empties it out.

There is a bone like a dorsal fin on a shark that basically sits on top of the roof of your mouth and extends upward. As it is connected to cartilage and other flexible tissues and structures, it can move a bit. Pushing on the roof of your mouth moves the bone. Depending on your anatomy, pressing on your forehead could also move it, but it’s mostly the tongue. Moving the bone disturbs mucus and can break sealed nasal passages.
