You know how sometimes water has a really odd, dry mouth feel? Certain bottled water brands like Dasani even have a reputation of tasting “dry”.

Certain water bottling companies add in things “for taste” that amount to not much more than salt. Dasani, Pure Life, many of the bottled water brands do this. If you want to avoid that, stick to spring water. Check the ingredients, and if it has anything added “for taste” avoid that brand.

It’s the minerals in them that give the different tastes. If you want to know why there are minerals in the water, sometime pick up a bottle of distilled water, and drink that. Most people don’t really like the taste of pure water. Most people think it tastes flat or bland.

So a lot of “spring water” and “mineral water” has various salts and minerals mixed in.

Usually if a liquid feels dry, it’s because it has a pH greater than neutral, ie it is basic or alkaline. The mineral content of bottled water can affect its pH, so it’s possible that this sensation comes from the water being slightly basic.
