Imagine there is a machine that is vibrating as it operates. What happens if you put your hand on that vibrating machine? Your hand will shake too, the vibrations of the machine also push on your hand.

The vibrating machine is also probably pretty loud too, but why is that? The machine is surrounded by air which is also caused to vibrate just like your hand. That is what sound is, the vibration of air. Sound can also be within water as vibrations of water, or any substance really.

Now what happens when your body touches vibrating air? Just like your hand touching the machine the vibrations will transfer as the air pushes on your body. For weak vibrations we have a specialized, very sensitive membrane in our ears to detect it. But powerful vibrations can just be felt as the beating you describe.

Loud sounds/music are sound waves that travel through the air, and when they reach your body they are converted from vibrations to resonance. Resonance is the feeling of vibrations of the frequencies in your chest cavity.
