why dogs (especially German shepherd) are so obsessed with sticks

I’m looking at my German shepherd right now, going totally nuts on this massive branch, it’s too larger for her to carry around but she chews on it like her life depends on it. why?

With the noise you keep making when she tries shoes?

Sticks are safer.

It is generally thought of a bone replacement item, dogs can gain substantial nutrition from chewing on bones and were often thrown the bones after a meal.

Familiarity: wood has that natural untouched smell of the great outdoors

Instinct: wood is just the right consistency to clean teeth

Comfort: think of it as doggy chewing gum

Activity: self-explanatory

Fun & play: all domestic dogs are just puppies that never grow up

Showing-off: you didn’t spot this, the greatest stuck that ever existed, now did you?

Don’t know the answer but we have an Australian Shepherd that collects sticks. The bigger the better. Hauls them all the way home. Sometimes he chooses small trees and is not happy when he has to give up because they’re too big.

For what it’s worth I have had 3 German Shepherds and none of them have been particularly fond of sticks. They will ALWAYS try to get the stick if I have the stick (like cleaning up the yard after a storm). Otherwise they wouldn’t bother.

ELI5 why humans are so obsessed with money. At least sticks have intrinsic value and are fun to chew on.
