Why every number to the power of 0 is equal to 1?

10^2 = 10*10 = 100

10^1 = 10*1 = 10

10^0 = 1

10^-1 = -10*1 = -10

10^-2 = -10*-10 = -100

10^-3 = -10* -10* -10 = -1000
