What is business is Facebook in?
You might be surprised to learn Facebook is in the business of collecting data on its users and selling that to advertisers.
That’s how companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Youtube make money.
Why does Facebook provide a log in API that other websites can use? To collect you user information from those websites as well.
They build a profile for each of it’s users based on what they post, what they like, and what they watch and then use that information to sell advertising space to advertisers.
The problem is you are so used to the ads that you ignore them. But start paying attention and look at the sites and you’d be surprised who many ads pop up. Aside from ads that intterupt Youtube videos, social media ads are designed to be unintrusive and subconcious.
I still get a ton, and I even use an ad blocker.
Your information is the product their selling. You’re providing the data for free. They spend a bunch of money to glean information from this data. Then they sell that information.
Photos have location information on them. Photos have information in them. The people you share them with is information.
Remember, they only promised to keep the information safe from other people. They get to look at it all they want.
There is a saying, I forget who it is attributed to: “If its free, *you* are the product of value.” Google/facebook/GenericSocialMedia sells the privilege of catching your attention to advertisers. Because your content provides insight into who you are and what your consumer profile may be, they consider it more targeted and thus likely to be more effective. While you may not notice advertising directly on those sites, the presence of cookies associated with your social media accounts can follow you around the Internet.
