why/how do people randomly get muscle cramps?

Muscles are controlled by neurons, which work using charged particles (ions) that say if the muscle should be on/off.

The reason people get cramps is because these ions can get used up/dissipate, etc. just like gas in your car. Especially when they are being used a lot, but not always. The ions have to come from somewhere and usually come from what you eat and drink (usually they’re called electrolytes).

Your car will run fine up until the exact moment there is no more gas, muscles are very similar. You won’t know it’s coming until it’s too late.

Thankfully there are ways to not run out of gas. Even without a gas guage you would know “let’s just add fuel every X miles”.
