It was a sales tool. 4k sounds 4x better than 1080p. And it is when you multiply the numbers.
3840 * 2160 = 8,294,400 pixles
1920 * 1080 = 2,073,600

If you told joe idiot consumer 2160p they would think it’s only twice the resolution.
