Why is Chile so much colder than the rest of South America?

The water is cold, flowing up from the Antarctic. Most of the country is extremely high and dry, which means the atmosphere is thinner and holds less heat.

I’m not familiar with anything that shows the entire country is colder than the rest of the continent (can anyone corroborate?)

But I do recall that Chile’s beaches tend to be colder, because the ocean currents bring cooler water to the shores in the area, causing ambient temperatures on the shorelines of the country to be several degrees colder than most in South America.

If this effect is large enough, I certainly could see how it could affect spaces further inland.
