Before chips were introduced to cards in the United States, card readers just required a quick swipe or insert and pull out. There was no chance of leaving your card behind because you never let go of it and you instantly put it away after swiping. Because chip readers required more time to work they broke everyone’s habit of putting their card away and accidentally encouraged people to leave their cards behind. The obnoxious beeping of readers now is an attempt to correct the problem of abandoned cards that initially plagued chip readers when they were introduced in the United States.
