Why is it advantageous for shot putters to have so much body fat?

Would reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass not make them more effective?

Most shot putters I’ve seen have more muscle than fat still. But if we’re talking about high schoolers, my guess is the body fat compensates for the lack of muscles that they have at that age to increase their mass and thus reduce the moment of inertia from the ball on the body, giving them a more stabilized shot.

It isn’t advantageous. But it’s not really detrimental. Gaining muscle is not prevented by gaining fat in any way.

They’re fat because there’s no real incentive for them to be lean.
