Biting your fingernails invariably leads to hang-nails which break the skin. Though your immune system is very good, chances are that at some point an infection will set in. Infection adds risk.

The number of viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can be under your nails is a near-endless list. To chew on your nails means you could ingest those things and you could become very sick. You also stick your fingers in your mouth to do so, which is frowned upon, and then touch surfaces that are usually not just touched by you. You can spread and get germs by doing it.

Biting fingernails is also bad for the teeth. Nails are hard and will impart a lot of stress on the enamel, teeth, and gums. It can lead to early wearing and teeth issues (which can eventually lead to additional infections and diseases).
