why is it called “tossing and turning,” and why do we do it when we can’t sleep?

Title says it all – but I’m wondering why it’s called that and why exactly we do it when we can’t sleep.

Probably comes from the olden days of sleeping on straw and horsehair mattresses that were lumpy and uncomfortable… so you would need to toss ( distribute the hair evenly) and Turn the mattress over until it was more comfortable. :)…. here are the origins
