Why is it less distracting to listen to music through headphones as it is out loud?

Tricky question, but it might be because of sound reflection. With headphones you get a direct input of sound to your ears, whereas without them, the sound reflects on every surface, wall, etc, causing slights echoes and creating a lot more input for your brain to process.
That’s my best guess.
