Adding to u/Nephisimian, not only do these animals come from eggs not temperature-regulated, also they do not rely on parents. If an animal is raised by parents, the parents are more likely to abandon and/or eat defective young. Resources such as food and parental energy are limited and no use wasting it on offspring unlikely to be able to pass on the genes. But if an animal hatches alone, it can survive if it can survive. And may even be LESS likely to be eaten because it will confuse predators just enough to make them grab another victim.
