It’s not all that uncommon in mammals.

The difference is that an under or overdeveloped animal is more capable of surviving cracking out of an egg than making it out of a living mother during vaginal birth.

This leads to more reptiles surviving, while mammals are much more likely to be miscarried or stillborn.
